Join the Maryland Tech Council, top tech and life sciences leaders, and state policymakers for the 2nd Annual Advocacy Summit and Leadership Dinner Thursday, January 19th in Annapolis.

8 AM – 3 PM
Advocacy Summit

The Maryland Tech Council’s Advocacy Summit enables industry leaders to connect with elected officials, share insights on public policy, and learn how advocacy can make a difference in Annapolis. The program will include panel discussions, presentations, and a networking reception. Learn about leveraging advocacy with policymakers and opportunities to achieve legislative, regulatory and other policy objectives that advance the interests of tech and life sciences in Maryland.

Session topics will include:

  • Maryland’s Life Sciences Ecosystem: Future Challenges and Opportunities - Maryland boasts one of the world’s strongest life sciences ecosystems. A Milken Institute report found that the industry employs 54,000 workers in the state, contributes $20 billion to the state’s economy, and delivers life-changing cures and treatments to the world. But finding talent to meet industry’s rapid growth is a daunting challenge. How can Maryland create a diverse talent pipeline to ensure our state remains a global life sciences leader? This panel will explore Maryland's life sciences advantages and challenges and what’s required to expand the state’s global life sciences leadership. Panelists will also discuss BioHub Maryland, a new initiative to enable opportunity for life sciences companies and career seekers through skills training, career resources, and capital.
  • Expanding Connectivity to Advance Equity and Innovation -  Across the country, addressing the digital divide and promoting equitable growth are a top priority for both the private and public sectors. Connectivity— both wired and wireless—plays a key role in addressing these goals. Come to this panel to learn more about efforts to expand broadband access, maximizing investments in new networks, and how improvements in connectivity will support a wave of innovation from transportation and public safety to healthcare and education.
  • Fireside Chat – Power of 2: Building a Strong Ecosystem for Maryland Life Sciences -

BIO Interim CEO Rachel King joins Maryland Tech Council CEO Kelly Schulz for a conversation on the key elements of building and sustaining a world-class life sciences ecosystem in Maryland. Topics include leadership, talent development, cultivating mission-driven organizations, and growing the state’s innovation ecosystem. King is the co-founder and former CEO of GlycoMimetics, Inc., previously served as Chair of the BIO Board, and boasts diverse executive experience across the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • Fireside Chat with Patient Advocates: Patients First, Their Personal Story (during plated lunch)
  • Evolving and Complex World of Data Privacy Legislation  - While data privacy and security should be at the forefront of every business strategy, states and localities are stepping in to enact robust laws related to data and healthcare privacy, without always considering the collateral ramifications of the laws passed. This panel will share thoughts and perceptions towards data privacy legislation and discuss some of the challenges faced in adopting data protection measures. Come listen as privacy experts from across multiple disciplines chat about the various aspects of privacy laws and their impact on our lives. The panel will also cover what they would want to see in federal/state privacy legislation, why not all data should be treated the same, privacy enforcement mechanisms, and cultural differences in attitudes toward privacy.

 5PM – 8 PM
Cocktail Reception & Leadership Dinner

The Maryland Tech Council’s Leadership Dinner is a must-attend event for networking with colleagues and policymakers and discussing policy initiatives impacting tech and life sciences. MTC will also share its legislative priorities at the dinner.
